If you are applying for an ITIN for the first time:
You will need to apply for your ITIN alongside filing your taxes. You will not be able to apply for an ITIN for the first time independent of filing your taxes. If you have missed the deadline to file your taxes or if you have not yet established the requirements to qualify as a U.S. resident for tax purposes, please connect with a member of an accredited VITA tax prep site or a member of an IRS affiliated Tax Assistance Center to learn more about how you can get ready to apply for an ITIN during the next tax filing season.
If you are applying for an ITIN renewal:
You are able to submit your renewal independent of filing your taxes. You will want to ensure that you have a valid ITIN when you do file your taxes.
