What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is an alternative identification number for individuals residing in the U.S. who are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). This nine-digit tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) enables you to:

  • File your taxes
  • Access certain public benefits
  • Access certain financial services

The IRS will issue you an ITIN regardless of your immigration status, and they will use this number for federal tax processing purposes only.

Please note that an ITIN does not provide legal immigration status, does not serve as a work authorization document, and does not serve as a form of photo identification.
